TM Targets to Provide More Premises in Iskandar With HSBB

Tuesday February 22, 2011

JOHOR BARU: Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) plans to increase the number of premises which have access to its UniFi high-speed broadband (HSBB) service in Iskandar Malaysia this year.

Johor TM general manager Mohd Roslan Mohd Rashidi said it was looking to achieve 45,000 commercial and residential premises connected with the services by year-end from 4,500 premises now.

He said the areas of coverage would be extended from three presently to five more zones to offer wider coverage for the HSBB connectivity within Iskandar Malaysia for its customers.

The five new zones are the Johor Baru Central, Pelangi, Pasir Gudang, Skudai and Tampoi areas while the existing areas are Nusajaya, Permas Jaya and Senai.

“Last year was the pre-introduction of the services for our potential customers in Iskandar and this year we are going on the ground to push the services to them,'' Mohd Roslan told StarBiz yesterday.

He was speaking after signing a HSBB service agreement with United Malaysia Land Bhd's (UM Land) wholly-owned subsidiary Seri Alam Properties Sdn Bhd acting head Frankie Tan Kiat How for its project in Pasir Gudang.

The event was witnessed by Pulai MP Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed and UM Land group chief executive officer Pee Tong Lim.

Last year, TM signed similar agreements with Mudra Tropika Sdn Bhd for its housing scheme in Jalan Kolam Ayer, Johor Baru and Dynasty View Sdn Bhd for its Seri Austin project in Tebrau corridor.

“We are going to sign with 15 more developers in Iskandar Malaysia for similar services this year,'' added Mohd Roslan.

He said the company preferred to sign with developers to provide and install the HSBB connectivity for their new residential and commercial launches rather than having the system installed at the completed properties.

However, Mohd Roslan said it would not totally ignore the brown field area. The company would be selective in offering the service to such areas as it involved high cost of laying down fibre-optic cables compared to green field areas.

He said one area which required careful planning was the RM1.8bil Johor Baru city centre transformation project, where the masterplan to be unveiled in the second-quarter of the year would involve the redevelopment of Johor Baru into a vibrant city.

JOHOR BARU: Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) expects the number of its UniFi customers nationwide to double or treble by the year-end.

Chief strategy officer Ahmad Azhar Yahya said since the three UniFi packages were launched on March 24, TM had signed up over 10,000 subscribers.

“We are seeing a steep increase in the number of new customers signing for the service daily and the trend is expected to continue,” he said on Saturday after the signing of an agreement between TM and Mudra Tropika Sdn Bhd, the developer of the RM330mil Nong Chik Heights here.

TM was represented by its executive vice president (SME) Shanti Jusnita Johari and Mudra Tropika by chairman Datuk Mohd Rashid Mohd Noor. The signing was witnessed by Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman.

Datuk Mohd Rashidi Mohd Noor (left) exchanging signed documents with Shanti Jusnita Johari while Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman (centre) and TM chief strategy officer Ahmad Azhar Yahaya look on.

Under the agreement, both parties would bear the cost of putting up fibre optics offering high-speed broadband (HSBB UniFi) infrastructure and services to house owners in the 14ha housing scheme.

Nong Chik Heights is a 50:50 joint-venture project between the Johor Government’s State Secretary Inc, which owns the Malay reserve land, and Mudra Tropika.

“We are going to sign (similar agreements) with 19 more developers in Johor Baru this and next year to equip their housing projects with the HSSB (service),” said Ahmad.

He said the other 19 projects were also in greenfield areas where it would be easier to lay the HSSB infrastructure instead on brownfield areas or places that were already developed.

Ahmad said about 150,000 premises within Iskandar Malaysia would have access to HSSB UniFi within the next two years.

He said the company would continue to evaluate the needs and demand from time to time for the HSSB service for areas in Johor outside Iskandar.

Ahmad said this could include Teluk Ramunia and Pengerang areas in Johor’s South East which had been earmarked to become the region’s new oil and gas hub spanning over 5,000ha.

Kung also urged local content providers to use the IPTV platform as an avenue to showcase their contents, adding that the government has put in seed money to help them establish their contents.

HyppTV was launched on March 24 together with TM's high-speed broadband (HSBB) service, UniFi.

Published: 2010/07/03

TELEKOM Malaysia Bhd (TM) (4863) expects to secure up to 60,000 subscribers for its high speed broadband (HSBB) service, or better known as UniFi, by the end of this year.

"We understand that UniFi will not be delivering big numbers this year, but the numbers are increasing. We aim for 6-8 per cent of the total premises of 750,000 to account for our customers," said HSBB programme director Ahmad Azhar Yahya.

Speaking to the media after the launching of its new areas in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, Ahmad Azhar said it will be a gradual increase as UniFi is still new to Malaysians and limited to selected areas.

TM, which will launch a customer online portal soon to draw more subscribers, currently has some 4,700 residential and business UniFi customers.

"Therefore, we are now expanding to an additional 18 areas nationwide, including Nothern and Southern parts of Malaysia starting July 1," said Ahmad Azhar.

The 18 new areas include industrial sites such as Kulim Hi-Tech in Kedah, Bayan Baru in Penang, Senai and Permas in Johor as well as more areas in Klang Valley.

In March 2010, TM launched UniFi in Bangsar, Subang Jaya, Shah Alam and Taman Tun Dr Ismail.

The rollout now covers more than 375,000 premises. UniFi is expected to reach 750,000 premises by the end of the year and 1.3 million premises by 2012.

Ahmad Azhar also said that TM plans to spend RM2 billion on its capital expenditure (capex) for its current financial year for UniFi's rollout.

TM's total expenditure for its HSBB project as at April 30 2010 has reached RM2.3 billion.

TM to offer latest US television shows

The pricing of the video-on-demand, including TV series, will be competitive, says Telekom Malaysia executive vice-president for consumer

Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) (4863) hopes to attract consumers to take up its Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) service by offering them the latest television series from major studios in the US at affordable prices.

While mobile operator Maxis Bhd has announced plans to launch its IPTV service in the third quarter of this year, incumbent operator TM has provided its IPTV service as part of a triple play offering for its high-speed broadband (HSBB) customers since March this year.

TM's IPTV customers in the four existing HSBB locations - Shah Alam, Subang Jaya, Bangsar and Taman Tun Dr Ismail - will not be charged for the IPTV channels and video-on-demand (VOD) until the trial period ends this month.

Although TM was unable to disclose the future pricing mechanism for its IPTV service, its executive vice-president for consumer Jeremy Kung said pricing of the VOD will be competitive.

"VOD is not just for the latest movies but also series. We will get the series 24 hours after they have been aired in the US, so this is targeted at those who are downloading series from sites. Downloading will definitely take longer," he told Malaysian reporters earlier this week on the sidelines of the CommunicAsia 2010 in Singapore.

With some 22 channels currently, Kung said TM will add more premium channels and increase is VOD titles.

Exclusive FIFA merchandise only at Giant! Rollover to view!

TM group chief executive officer Datuk Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa said while Maxis will be a competitor in the retail space, the mobile operator will be a TM customer on the wholesale space for HSBB.

"There must be a balance on infrastructure and content being made available on a wholesale basis. So eventually, the market will have to find that balance. Initially everyone will try to be defensive on what they have, but eventually consumers will have more choice and they will decide," he said.

To help content innovation, Zamzamzairani said TM is working with local content developers.

"What we are doing is offering the back office support to supply that content. We don't guarantee the content but we can help them in terms of distribution and billing," he said.

TM also launched its global ethernet services (GES) on Tuesday to strengthen its leadership position in the industry.

GES is a networking solutions which provides reliable and secured point-to-point, point-to-multipoint and multipoint options connection via extensive global network covering locations such as London, Hong Kong, Singapore, Amsterdam and the US.

The service is designed to deliver high bandwidth capacity and provide flexible and scalable bandwidth ranging from 1Mbps to 1Gbps.

TM Global executive vice-president Mohamad Rozaimy Abdul Rahman said the GES solution would benefit the government and enterprise market as well as the financial and manufacturing industries.

"It allows organisations to connect using TM's multi-service Ethernet access, which is built on our metro optical network, to our global Internet backbone," he said.

Get your taste of High Speed Broadband in Malaysia

Gabey Goh

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010 15:04:00

That's the advice TM UniFi programme director, Ah mad Azhar Yahya had for consumers eager to get their taste of High Speed Broadband (HSBB).

"With UniFi now launched, our main focus is on ramping up capacity and coverage. We are just begin ning and haven't reached the optimum level of effi ciency," he said, adding that there is already a waiting list of interested subscribers numbering in the "thou sands".

"Getting UniFi brings about a change not just in terms of faster Internet speeds but in terms of the mode of de livery as well. Wiring needs require consideration, and I would advise soon-to-be subscribers to start thinking about it," he said. Currently the installation time takes between four to eight hours for landed properties (high rises need about two hours for installation), with a wait time of one to three weeks for an appointment.

Since the official launch of both the government's National Broadband Initiative and TM's UniFi on March 24, response has been mixed towards TM's packages.

On TM's bundling of IPTV and voice calls along with broadband Internet, Ahmad noted that it was "almost for free", with the waiving of the equipment cost for subscribers and the current IPTV content offerings not requiring any additional fees, for now.

He also added that it is intended as a teaser, a plat form for future opportunities for new services. As for voice calls, existing TM landline subscribers will be issued a new number but for those wishing to retain their original numbers, the copper lines will be maintained. A migration system is in the works.

"We are very ex cited about IPTV as it is the first time for us. It's a new horizon. Our content offerings are small now but we are defi nitely going to expand it and this will be an opportunity for local content providers to deliver their products on our platform and to monetise it. We see it as a long tail plat form. This will also give our customers more choice in their content."

As for the controversial Fair Usage Policy that TM initially implemented but withdrew, Ahmad stressed that it is to avoid a small number of high usage clients hogging bandwidth from the majority of average us ers, adding that for the time being TM will continue to monitor the situation in order to determine usage patterns.

"The way I see it, if it is used fairly across the board, there will be no need to implement it," he noted, add ing that high-usage consumers or those who do not like the idea of limits on their data usage could sign up for the 5Mbps business package (BIZ5) which will not be subjected to any limits and will not come with IPTV.

With UniFi now out, can consumers expect a further reduction in Streamyx rates?

"We have already announced the reduction of the Streamyx 4Mbps plan from RM160 to RM140 per month. In the coming months, we will be looking into realigning Streamyx's prices accordingly," replied Ahmad, adding that TM will continue to invest and improve Streamyx, with a commitment of three to five per cent of annual revenue earmarked for just that purpose.

As of last week, the number of UniFi subscribers stand at over 800, a mixture of new and trial subscrib ers whose trial period will end in May.

With Enterprise and Government packages due to be launched in July and the introductory promotion which waives the fees for installation (RM300) and equipment (RM800) to continue indefinitely at this point - all that's left now is to wait.
